The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation.
For me, I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And along the way, lessen the suffering of others. You’d be surprised how far that gets you.

A Little Unicode Goes A Long Way
So since I’m trying out iTunes Match, ALL my playlists are on my phone. It gets to be a bit much, and I’m still in the process of cleaning. One place the Music app is lacking is an indication of what is a playlist, a smart playlist or a folder.
I found a Unicode gear that displays on the phone for indicating smart playlists: ⚙
And am using a f for folders (long standing symbol used on Macs): ƒ
They don’t change the alphabetizing, and not sure if that’s unfortunate or not, but at least now I can tell what I’m clicking on. The gear shows up as a box in iTunes, unfortunately, as well as right now.

That’s you, drops of water. And you’re on top of the mountain of success. But one day you start sliding down the mountain and you think wait a minute, I’m a mountain top water drop. I don’t belong in this valley, this river, this low dark ocean with all these drops of water. And you feel confused. Then one day it gets hot and you slowly evaporate into air, way up, higher than any mountain top, all the way to the heavens. Then you understand that it was at your lowest that you were closest to God. Life’s a journey that goes round and round and the end is closest to the beginning. So if it’s change you need, relish the journey. Be a drop of running water. Obey those invincible poles in your soul. Gravity. Evaporation. Love. Creativity. It’s in the darkest moments when the cracks allow the inner light to come out.
The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures which made the sensible economic decision that there’s no good reason to go into space—each discovered, studied, and remembered by the ones who made the irrational decision.
What sets us apart as humans is our ability to appreciate beauty.
This makes us the cruelest species of all.

There will only be one. And it won’t be what I would call the “rough cut,” it’ll be the “final cut.” The other one will be some sort of interesting artifact that people will look at and say, “There was an earlier draft of this.” … In essence, films never get finished, they get abandoned. At some point, you’re dragged off the picture kicking and screaming while somebody says, “Okay, it’s done.” That isn’t really the way it should work. Occasionally, [you can] go back and get your cut of the video out there, which I did on both American Graffiti and THX 1138; that’s the place where it will live forever. So what ends up being important in my mind is what the DVD version is going to look like, because that’s what everybody is going to remember. The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie.
